Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the education sector in Uganda has been severe. Schools remain closed to date. And while some children in urban areas are involved in online classes, the majority of children in rural areas have not had a chance to access any form of learning since March 2020 when schools closed.
Learning just isn’t the same as it used to be.
“I miss my school. I miss my friends and teachers,” says Dickson, a former P.5 student at Lauren Memorial School. Dickson has traded learning for work during the pandemic, as he now works in a sand quarry.
But schools will open again—and when they do, children like Dickson will need educational help to make up for lost learning time.(if they are motivated enough to come back to school).
As schools prepare for a safe reopening, this has to be put in consideration too.
