Tailoring Program
The Tailoring Program at Suubi Skills provides students with essential garment making and design skills, preparing them for the fashion and textile industries. With an emphasis on sustainability, we have a workshop for our students to fix or upcycle other students clothing for free. This includes school uniform. Early in the term, all students undertake the pillow project whilst this teaches them a range of simple stitches early on, it also ensures they all go home with a pillow. Tailoring skills empower students to create and market their own products, supporting both creativity and entrepreneurship.
What We Teach
- Material Selection and Fabric Knowledge: Understanding materials is crucial for quality tailoring; students learn how to choose and work with different fabrics.
- Garment Construction:From aprons to school uniforms, students develop the skills to create a variety of garments, with an emphasis on craftsmanship and functionality.
- Design and personalization:Students are encouraged to apply their creativity and learning to design items that are both practical and expressive.
Real-World Experience
Tailoring students participate in field trips to Kampala’s material markets, gaining insights into sourcing quality materials and observing the industry in action. These experiences broaden their understanding and strengthen their confidence as emerging designers and tailors.
