Suubi Skills Community Projects Uganda
Welcome to Suubi Skills Community Projects, where we empower Uganda’s next generation with hands-on training in mechanics, tailoring and hairdressing through an inclusive, community-centred approach. Founded on the belief that practical skills can open doors to a brighter future, Suubi Skills provides young people with the opportunity to gain valuable and entrepreneurial skills that lead to sustainable livelihoods.
Our workshops take place within a supportive school environment, reaching over 90 students weekly, with 40% of our mechanical engineering class comprised of young women. As we look forward to expanding, our programs will welcome additional students from the wider community and support those who have left traditional schooling. This expansion allows us to broaden our reach and impact by opening up specialised skill-building workshops that reflect Uganda’s cultural and economic landscape, such as making reusable pads, aprons and mending school uniforms in our tailoring class.
Our Program
Our curriculum is designed to meet real-world demands and includes in-depth training led by specialised teachers in:
- Mechanics: basic and advanced diagnostics, vehicle repair, practical hands-on experience, driving lessons, and problem-solving skills.
- Tailoring: Material selection, sewing techniques, garment construction and creative design for school uniforms. The pillow project which ensures every child at the school has access to a pillow at home.
- Hairdressing: Professional grooming and styling techniques, including braids, twists, cornrows and faux locs and client service skills.
To further enhance learning, we plan to introduce excursions to Kampala, where students in mechanics gain real-world experience at our partnering garage, tailing students visit material markets to deepen their understanding of industry practices and hairdressers spend time in a busy salon in the capital city observing customer-client relationships and assisting with braiding.
Our Future
We are raising funds to continue delivering these skills to over 90 students and to grow the program to reach even more youth. Expansion plans include doubling classroom resources, bringing in more skilled teacher and facilitating school trips to enrich students’ practical experience.
Join us in our mission to shape a skilled, resilient generation. Your support directly impacts the lives of young people in Uganda by giving them the tools and knowledge to forge their own paths to success.
